This report explores the origins, ideological underpinnings, and known
details of the various Sunni jihadi groups operating within Pakistan.
Since the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, these groups have overlapped,
allied, and transformed for various tactical and doctrinal reasons. This
paper maps these alliances and cleavages in hopes of furthering the
understanding of the current jihadi milieu in Pakistan. While it is
widely known that al Qaeda has been linked to various jihadi leaders,
many reports presume a monolithic Pakistani jihad. However, the
distinctions between these groups are necessary to capture the full
picture.
