The Ninth Annual Conflict Transformation Workshop
Gender, Democracy and Peacebuilding in South Asia

December 1st – 4th, 2011

The WISCOMP Conflict Transformation Workshops seek to empower young women and men with the motivation, skills and expertise to participate in peacebuilding processes in the South Asian region. They are designed with a purpose to:

  • Transform the trust deficit between people of different nationalities, cultures, ethnicities, and religions, and encourage empathy for diverse worldviews;

This year, the Conflict Transformation Workshop will address issues that lie at the intersection of gender, democracy and peacebuilding in the context of conflicts in the South Asian region.

Who can apply: The Workshop is open to women and men (in the age group of 22 to 35 years) from the South Asian region. Only those who can make a commitment to attend all four days of the Workshop should apply. WISCOMP will cover travel and accommodation for the duration of the Workshop.

BIPSS Issue Brief, August, 2011 edition has just been published. The Issue Brief focuses on human trafficking, one of the looming security threats for Bangladesh. It highlights the challenges and implications of human trafficking from both human and national security dimensions.

                     Trafficking in persons, the darkest episode of population mobility, has been widely considered as a major human security issue today. Increasingly, people from the poor families are being forced to this new form of human slavery and the trade of human dignity. In Bangladesh, human trafficking has gone to an acute condition. Governments, though endowed huge effort, failed evidently to control the trafficking in persons in the country. The complicity of the government with the trafficking nexus has added much doubt whether the government is abundantly willing to address the issue, while the US Department of state included Bangladesh in its trafficking watchlist in the 2 tier ranking that poses of the threat of sanctions upon Bangladesh, if the country fails to improve the trafficking condition by next year.
